The Atreides

"It is said that the Duke Leto blinded himself to the perils of Arrakis, that he walked heedlessly into the pit. Would it not be more likely to suggest he had lived so long in the presence of extreme danger he misjudged a change in its intensity? Or is it possible he deliberately sacrificed himself that his son might find a better life? All evidence indicates the Duke was a man not easily hoodwinked."

From "Muad'Dib: Family Commentaries" by Princess Irulan

House Atreides, royal cousins of the Emperor, had ruled the beautiful plant world of Caladan for 20 generations before they were ordered to Arrakis in the 72nd year of the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV.

Before the move to Arrakis, the Atreides were a popular house. They were respected for their character and humanity. Their mortal enemies, the Harkonnens, despised them for these reasons and vowed to destroy them.

House Atreides, under Duke Leto Atreides, was sent to Arrakis as part of an elaborate scheme to fill the coffers of the Emperor, Harkonnens, and other Great Houses, as well as destroy the Atreides.

Although the Emperor and the Harkonnens made thorough plans, they did not know that the Duke's young son was the final product of a 4,000 year old Bene Gesserit breeding program. A program with the goal of producing a man whose mental powers would bridge space and time. A man who could view time as a mariner views the sea.

They did not know that sending the boy to Arrakis, dipping him in an environment rich in spice, his prescient powers would be unleashed and the Atreides would rise again.
